The Roar of the Engine!! "Best of Show" - Bentley at San Diego British Car Day, October 5/2008
St Patrick's Day at the Penny Lane Here's "the lads" at Penny Lane. We held a raffle for Richard Calver's new book. The lads are from left to right, Roy Jensen (yes, that's his real name!), Bruce Bridges, me in the Irish hat, Dave Crowne (receiving book), Nate Coleman (with son Liam) and Bob Humphries. Car Pix (Click on thumbnails for full-size pictures) My restoration has taken so long (into its seventh year) that I thought I would include here some pictures of various elements of the car that I am impatiently waiting to attach. Here is a sample.
Hopefully, all these goodies will be back in the car with the rebuilt engine, rebuilt transmission, rebuilt front suspension, new Sanden A/C unit, new 105 amp alternator and fresh paint job in the next few weeks. See you on the road.

That is snow in the background! (center) View of the serpentine descent into Palm Desert - Hwy 74. (right) Bob Humphries with margarita at Marriott lunch.
(left) Same crew lunching at the Marriott. (center) Interesting lobby of the Marriott Desert Springs Hotel. Guests are taken by that little boat to other parts of the hotel. (right) Our gang doing "the Flamingo"! Here are some of the "interesting" angles to installing the grille into my restoration project. (left) into the belly of the beast! Engine installed and awaiting grille and headlamp doors (right) headlight "doors" (as the Brits call them) installed and grille in place
Highlight of our first meeting in the New Year was the appearance of Mark Swannie's impeccable '76 convertible. Although Mark splits his time between here and Hawaii, the convertible lives here all year round. (update, this car now has a new owner, Mike Murphy, who hasn't shown up to our meetings as yet)
(Left) This is the Jensen crowd at Penny Lane devouring Mark Swannie's car. Note the late model double bumpers. (Right) The interior shows the luxurious use of walnut burl. This is Jim Putney's beautiful convertible 2311/1709 (ex factory 7/75) which lives all year in Palm Springs although Jim goes back to rainy Oregon. Seems a shame. Maybe we can car-sit in the off-season? Note the different grille, only half as many slats. I don't know if that was factory installed or modified at a later date. (update: This car now belongs to Eric Schwartz - long-time Jensen enthusiast. He brought it to near-concours condition in time for the Jensen 2005 Nationals in San Diego and it looked great. Hope to see more of it in the near future.)
===================================== The following pictures were taken at British Car Day, Oct. 11 2003. In addition, the following weekend the vintage car races took place at North Island Naval Air Station, Coronado CA. (Left) Dave and Georgia Crowne to the left. Marg Adams to the right ,all partaking of an elegant picnic. (Right) The merry Jensen crew. That's the peripatetic Zac Marshall in the front row with the white t-shirt, standing beside Bob Adams holding the champagne bottle aloft [empty!].
(Left) This shows the old and the new Mini-Coopers. As you see the new car is substantially larger; particularly the wheels. (Center) Beautifully restored and maintained '71 Mark III belonging to Dave and Georgia Crowne. (Right) The "Black Death" project car belonging to Bob Adams. Better things are on the way for this car!
(Left) Jaguar XK-120 which wasn't even Best-of-Show, but was parked next door to the Best-of-Show XK-120 FHC. It unfortunately left the scene before I could get it. (Center) Unusual surgery to a Triumph resulting in lots of trunk space for the owner for those long road trips. (Right) '33 Austin 7 beautifully restored. What is amazing about this little box of a car is that there is more space in the rear seating area than the Interceptor! ======================== Historic Car Races on Oct. 11, 2003 at North Island Naval Air Station, Coronado, CA (Left) Dave Crowne and Bob Adams at the races. (Center) '27 Bugatti being prepared to race. (Right) MB 300 SL also ready for the races. (Left) Bugatti shown above now at full chat on the track. (The track consists of the landing strip of the Naval Air Station with concrete barriers outlining the circuit. Is that a comforting thought during a high-speed corner?). (Center) Racing scene at final corner before start/finish line. How many can you name? (Right) Alfa Romeo also shown in the center picture taking the short route in the turn.
These pictures were taken during Rolling British Car Day. (left) Happy group at the Penny Lane after the back country tour. Left to right Bruce & Leo Bridges, Marg Adams, Fran & Bob Jensen. Mr. Jensen's Jensen in front (center) Classic '53 Bentley Continental (right) Interior of Bentley.
Here are some pictures from our March 2nd meeting at Balboa Park Automotive Museum. Later we had lunch at the beautiful Del Coronado Hotel, Coronado CA.

(Center) Fancy new aircleaner decal designed by Tom Porter. (Right) Bruce Bridges Interceptor and Royal Enfield motorcycle [replica]. Amazing match of colour! ============================ Another interesting exhibit at the S.D. Automotive Museum commemorated the first transcontinental automobile trip by a woman. (This is where all the trouble started!). (Left) Alice H. Ramsey is the first woman to drive across the continental U.S. This in 1909 when it was impossible to leave the turn signals on! (Right) Here is the happy group who made the trip.
(Left) This is the air cleaner decal designed by Tom Porter of Barrie, Ontario, Canada. (Right) The front entrance of 'The Del'. ============================ Here are some pix that show some 'snail-like' progress in the restoration of my car. Although the painting and body work is done, much of the work is yet to be completed. I am reinstalling some of the exterior bits and pieces. (left) This gives a view of the new colour complete with the new bonnet badge (proudly incorrect for the Mark III I realize) (right) parking light installed, inoperative of course. ================================= Tom Garcia's convertible has been a long time in the garage getting a meticulous (and loving) restoration. Here are a couple of pix of the interior. Note the unusual deeper blue colour on the Connolly and the gorgeous expanse of walnut burl.
Here are some examples of airdams which have been added by some Jensenistas: (left) Bob Adams Mark III w/ fiberglass airdam originally optional equipment on Datsun 510. (middle) Dan Crowley's Mark III w/ Martin Robey airdam. (right) Tom Porter's Mark III also w/ slightly different Datsun 510 optional equipment . Here are some of the attendees at British Car Day Oct 6,2002. What an accomplishment!
